Food Preservation: The Cool Kitchen Gadget Post
So I debated — is this post about food preservation or one of the coolest kitchen gadgets I own? Well I decided it's really about both! I love summer vegetables in the winter and I love this gadget, so I present...
The vintagey cool Geka cast iron green bean frencher! I am so curious to know if anyone else out there owns one of these? If so, I'd love to hear more of the history on this guy.
You simply insert the green bean and depending on which of the two holes you use, one gives a longer cut than the other (I went with the long cut). Crank the handle and just keep feeding until you are done.
You then end up with a beautiful tray of freshly "frenched" green beans!
I then toss them in a pot of boiling water to blanch for 2-3 minutes. Strain and pour immediately into an ice water bath to stop the cooking process and keep the bright green color.
You then label and package your freezer bag for use over the winter — and call it a day.
This really is a fun tool and project I have enjoyed doing ever since I came across my Geka kitchen slicer! What tool in your kitchen do you enjoy pulling out and using every year?

That. Is. The. Coolest. Thing. Ever!!!! I had no idea those even existed. I think my favorite kitchen gadget is my vacuum sealer. But now I'm on the prowl for Geka slicer.
ReplyDeleteThis is good, but you need to use the gadget so that you get better crispy..
